Rooftops

lyrics

I thought we’d never leave this rooftop,
thought we’d never try.
all the memories that I’ve held here
stretch up to the sky.
but where the road became the river
and where the river held you tight,
we were lost to the night.

you were bathed in pale moonshine,
silver-tongued and full of flight.
a city waking underneath you,
the ocean sleeping by your side.
but on the roof we heard the footsteps
that led you slowly out of sight,
we were lost to the night.

you say you know that you have broken
all i am and wish to be.
you climb the 57 steps
just to lay your body next to me.
and as our souls sounded on pavement
and echoed something of our light,
we were lost to the night.
